Trump Announces 130% Tariffs On China

President Donald Trump announced a dramatic escalation in the US-China trade conflict, declaring a new 100% tariff on all Chinese goods starting November 1—on top of existing 30% duties, and fresh export controls on critical software. The move follows Beijing’s tightening of export restrictions on rare earth minerals essential for electronics, electric vehicles, and defense manufacturing. Citing China’s “sinister and hostile” actions, Trump hinted he might cancel an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.

The announcement rattled global markets, with the Dow plunging 878 points and tech stocks tumbling as investors braced for renewed trade turmoil. The confrontation underscores how fragile the spring trade truce has been, when both nations had agreed to ease tariffs after earlier hikes of up to 145%.

China, which controls most of the world’s rare earth supply, recently expanded its export licensing rules, disrupting supply chains for US giants like Nvidia and Apple. Analysts warn the new tariffs could send costs soaring, squeeze American manufacturers, and reignite inflationary pressures. While Trump suggested he may reconsider before the deadline, the tariff threat marks one of his most aggressive moves yet in an increasingly high-stakes economic standoff with Beijing.
