Inside The Rise Of America’s Female Billionaires
There are now 154 female billionaires in the US, and while they are fewer in number than their male counterparts, the wealth gap at the very top is narrowing: their median net worth matches the men’s at just over $2 billion, according to data from Altrata. In a span of five years, the percentage of these women who are at least partially self-made (having built or significantly grown their own enterprises) jumped from 40% to 60% in 2024.
Legacy wealth remains a major driver. However, many heiresses are also active CEOs, like Abigail Johnson and Lynsi Snyder, which makes their status partly inherited and partly selfmade. On the other side of the spectrum, we see modern titans like Judy Faulkner and Diane Hendricks who built their enterprises from scratch.
Interestingly, a new “celebrity-entrepreneur” class has emerged — which includes stars like Taylor Swift and Rihanna, although they sit at the lower end of the billionaire scale. Their fortunes came after reaching celebrity status, by turning their personal brands into business empires and through historical cultural events.
