Ultraprocessed Foods Are Cancerous To Women Under 50
Rates of colorectal cancer in younger adults have been rising sharply, and a growing body of research is probing whether ultraprocessed foods may be part of the reason. A new study in JAMA Oncology found that women under 50 who consumed the most ultraprocessed foods — about 10 servings a day — had a 45% higher risk of developing early precancerous colorectal adenomas compared with those who ate roughly three servings. These foods, which now make up a majority of the US diet, include packaged breads and cereals, sauces and condiments, and sweetened beverages. While the findings don’t prove cause and effect, they add important evidence to concerns raised by rising cancer rates in younger people.
Researchers followed over 29,000 female nurses for more than two decades, collecting detailed diet questionnaires and colonoscopy results. They found strong links between high UPF intake and adenomas, a type of polyp that can develop into cancer, though no link emerged for serrated lesions. Scientists say ultraprocessed foods may influence cancer risk by contributing to obesity and diabetes, disrupting gut microbes, increasing inflammation, or damaging the intestinal lining.
Experts emphasize moderation, not panic. Some UPFs contain beneficial nutrients, and many factors contribute to colorectal cancer risk. Still, limiting heavily processed foods, prioritizing whole foods, exercising, and screening starting at age 45 remain key steps for early detection and prevention.

DOJ Files Lawsuit Against California Over New Congressional Districts
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against California over newly approved congressional maps, escalating a coast-to-coast fight over mid-decade redistricting ahead of the 2026 elections. California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50 last week, a measure championed by Governor Gavin Newsom that redraws districts to give Democrats a potential pickup of five GOP-held seats. The Biden administration argues the maps unlawfully rely on racial considerations, accusing state officials of creating “racially gerrymandered” districts in violation of the 14th Amendment. Attorney General Pam Bondi called the move a “brazen power grab,” while Newsom’s team dismissed the challenge as political sour grapes.
The lawsuit marks the first time federal prosecutors have intervened in the wave of new maps pushed by both parties as they race to shape the next House majority. Republicans in Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina have redrawn districts without facing federal action, despite civil rights groups warning their maps weaken minority voting power. California’s Prop 50 emerged as a direct response to Trump-backed remapping in Texas aimed at expanding GOP seats.
The federal case joins an ongoing challenge from the California Republican Party and sets up a major legal showdown with national stakes. With House control narrowly split, both parties see these maps as pivotal heading into 2026 — and as a test of the limits of partisan redistricting.

Record Number Of Women Want To Leave US Now
Gallup data shows a striking rise in the number of Americans who say they would permanently leave the country if they could, with younger women driving the trend. In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 express a desire to move abroad — four times the rate a decade ago and far higher than among men their age. This shift began around 2016 and has remained elevated across both Democratic and Republican administrations, suggesting a deeper change rather than a purely partisan reaction.
The resulting 21-point gender gap is the widest Gallup has ever recorded and unusually large by global standards. Unlike younger women in other advanced economies, whose migration aspirations have remained steady, younger American women are now far more likely to imagine their futures elsewhere. That desire spans marital status and parenthood, with similar shares of single, married, child-free, and caregiving women wanting to relocate.
The rise coincides with a steep drop in younger women’s confidence in US institutions, particularly the judiciary, where trust has fallen sharply since 2015. While aspirations do not equal plans, the data signals a profound shift: millions of younger American women are increasingly questioning their place in the country and envisioning lives beyond its borders.

A new Gallup analysis shows a striking 17-point drop in Americans who say religion is important to their daily lives, falling from 66% in 2015 to 49% today. That shift places the US among the steepest declines recorded globally in the past decade, bringing American attitudes closer to other wealthy OECD nations while widening the gap with the global median, which has remained above 80% for nearly twenty years. The US now sits in an unusual middle ground: less religious than much of the world, but more religious than its economic peers.
