Trump’s Tariff Deals And No-Deals Come Into Effect

The global trade landscape is being shaken once again as U.S. President Donald Trump doubles down on protectionist policies, announcing sweeping new tariffs affecting allies and adversaries alike. See full list of tariffs on countries. In a dramatic escalation, India now faces a 50% tariff on exports to the U.S., after Trump imposed an additional 25% duty over its continued purchases of Russian oil. The move, effective August 27, drew sharp rebuke from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, calling the action “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” and vowing to "take all actions necessary to protect its national interests." What’s at stake for India?
Trump, defending the decision, declared, “India doesn't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine.” At a White House event, he hinted at more sanctions to come: “You're going to see a lot more, so much secondary sanctions.” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, without directly referencing the tariffs, pledged to safeguard the country’s farmers, “The welfare of our farmers is the highest priority… India will never compromise.”
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s President Karin Keller-Sutter’s last-ditch mission to Washington ended without a deal, leaving a 39% tariff unresolved. Brazil also faces 50% tariffs, while Canada and the EU are under threat of hikes. As the tariffs ripple globally, fears of stagflation and recession are rising, with analysts warning of mounting economic pressure.
Uber’s Having A Sexual Assault Problem
Uber has faced over 400,000 reports of sexual assault and misconduct between 2017 and 2022 in the U.S., which is an average of one every eight minutes, according to newly unsealed court records. The data suggests a far graver problem than the company publicly acknowledged. While Uber touted its ride safety features and claimed 99.9% of trips were incident-free, internal records and interviews reveal the company tested, but didn’t fully implement, several safety tools that could have prevented assaults, including a risk-prediction algorithm and in-car video recording.
Executives reportedly hesitated to enforce key safety measures due to legal and financial risks tied to its gig worker model. Reports show that many assaults followed a predictable pattern: female passengers or drivers, late nights, bar pick-ups, and intoxicated victims. Despite promising safer experiences, Uber delayed initiatives like matching women passengers with women drivers in the U.S., citing cultural and legal concerns.
The company now faces more than 3,000 lawsuits, accused of covering up a “sexual-assault epidemic” while avoiding full accountability. Former and current employees describe a culture of silence, with some even undermining survivors to protect Uber’s image. A California trial scheduled for September may further test Uber’s claims of safety and transparency.
Soldier Opens Fire at Fort Stewart, Injures Five
Five U.S. Army soldiers were shot and injured on Wednesday morning when an active-duty service member opened fire at Fort Stewart, a major Army base in Georgia. The alleged shooter, Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, was taken into custody around 11:35 a.m., about 40 minutes after the incident began at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth were briefed on the incident, which reignites concerns about safety on U.S. military installations. Who is Quornelius Radford?
According to Brig. Gen. John Lubas, Radford used a personal handgun, not a military-issued weapon, in the attack. The motive remains under investigation. Radford, a logistics specialist assigned to Fort Stewart since 2022, had not previously been deployed. He is now in pre-trial confinement. Three of the five injured soldiers required surgery and were transported to Savannah’s Memorial Health University Medical Center. All victims are in stable condition and expected to recover. What we know so far.
Authorities praised fellow soldiers who intervened and tackled Radford, likely preventing further casualties. Fort Stewart briefly went into lockdown but reopened by early afternoon. It is critical to note that Radford had a pending DUI charge and a red-light violation from May, information reportedly unknown to his command. The FBI and Army Criminal Investigation Division are jointly investigating.
