Trump and Xi Kick Off "Biggest Summit Ever" in Beijing
President Donald Trump received a grand military welcome at the Great Hall of the People on Thursday, marking the first US presidential visit to China in nearly a decade. (See photos) Flanked by a "powerhouse" delegation including Elon Musk and Tim Cook, Trump characterized the high-stakes meeting as "maybe the biggest summit ever," emphasizing his personal friendship with President Xi Jinping. What’s at stake for markets?
The two leaders held "constructive" talks on the Iran war, trade, and Taiwan. While Xi warned of the "Thucydides Trap" — the historical tendency for rising and established powers to stumble into war — Trump focused on reciprocity, stating, “We’re going to have a fantastic future together.” Live updates here.
A significant breakthrough emerged as both sides agreed the Strait of Hormuz must remain open. Notably, Elon Musk joined the trip despite being under a US judge’s order to remain available for an ongoing trial against OpenAI. The summit continues through Friday, with Trump inviting Xi to visit the US this September. How was Marco Rubio in China despite a ban on him?

We Don’t Talk Anymore … to our Neighbors
Welcome to the age of "entertainment bunkers," where Americans are trading the "invisible glue" of neighborhood ties for algorithm-driven silos. A new AEI report reveals a neighborly freefall: only 25% of young Americans socialize with those next door, down from 51% in 2012.
Why the ghosting? Between remote work and the pandemic, Gen Z has traded "stir crazy" for "screen steady", with many now turning to AI for companionship. In Britain, 33% of young people feel chronically lonely, leading some to chat with ChatGPT eight times a day. While a robot won't get grumpy at 3 am, it also won't water your plants or challenge your worldviews. As we retreat indoors, we aren't just losing friends; we're losing the practice of being human together.
Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads
Home furniture brand Blu Dot blew up on CTV with help from Roku Ads Manager. Here’s how:
After a test campaign reached 211,000 households and achieved 1,010% ROAS, the brand went all in to promote its annual sales event. It removed age and income constraints to expand reach and shifted budget to custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.
The results speak for themselves. As Blu Dot increased their investment by 10x, ROAS jumped to 2,308% and more page-view conversions surpassed 50,000.
“For CTV campaigns, Roku has been a top performer,” said Claire Folkestad, Paid Media Strategist, Blu Dot. “Comping to our other platforms, we have seen really strong ROAS… and highly efficient CPMs, lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”
Using Roku Ads Manager, the campaign moved from a pilot to a permanent performance engine for the brand.
Education

US in a ‘Learning Recession’
America is facing a "learning recession," and it started way before the pandemic. New data shows student scores in reading and math began a "downward spiral" back in 2013, wiping out decades of record-breaking progress.
What’s to blame? Experts point to two culprits: the rollout of "bunkers" (aka social media) and the rollback of school accountability. Since 2011, states eased off the pressure to perform, and by 2017, news mentions of school penalties dropped by 97%. Meanwhile, 46% of teens are now online "almost constantly". Also, AI isn’t helping. While it’s easy to blame COVID-19, "the causes are bigger," involving a collapse in school authority and constant digital distraction. The silver lining? Places like DC and Atlanta are already "winding back up" with big wins in literacy.

A new online trend is turning vape users into unofficial “vape sommeliers”, with blogs and retailers recommending vape flavors to pair with coffee, desserts, and even full meals. Supporters frame it as an extension of food-and-drink culture, while critics say it glamorizes vaping and makes nicotine products feel unnecessarily aesthetic. The trend is also raising questions about whether flavored vapes are becoming more lifestyle-driven than smoking-cessation-focused.
