Trump Slaps Tariffs on Europe Over Greenland

President Donald Trump announced new tariffs targeting European countries opposing US control of Greenland, ordering a 10% import tax beginning in February, rising to 25% by June without an agreement. Trump said the measures were intended to pressure allies into negotiations, arguing Greenland is critical to US national security and Arctic strategy. Why Greenland matters to US — in maps.

European leaders, including officials from Denmark and Germany, criticized the move, warning it would strain transatlantic relations and disrupt trade. Several governments said Greenland’s status was not negotiable and called the tariff threat unjustified. EU to hold emergency leaders’ summit over tariffs.

Death Toll In Iran Protests Rises To 5,000

At least 5,000 people were killed in protests across Iran this month, including 500 security personnel, an Iranian official told Reuters. The official blamed Israel and armed groups abroad and said the toll was unlikely to rise significantly. Protests began in Tehran after the rial crashed on December 28 and expanded into nationwide anti-government demonstrations calling for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s removal.

Authorities imposed an internet blackout on January 8. Khamenei said “thousands” died and blamed the United States and President Donald Trump. Trump said he considered military action but later said Iran halted planned executions.

No Link Between Taking Tylenol’s Key Active in Pregnancy and Autism

A scientific review of 43 studies found no evidence that acetaminophen use during pregnancy increases autism or other neurodevelopmental risks. The review, published Friday in The Lancet, concluded there was no clinically significant increase in autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability, lead author Dr. Asma Khalil said. She called acetaminophen the recommended first-line treatment for pain or fever during pregnancy.

The review followed comments by President Donald Trump warning pregnant women against Tylenol. Medical groups disputed those claims, citing risks of untreated fever. The review excluded studies that failed to account for genetic and medical confounders.

WEIGH IN

Dating is being reshaped by burnout, ambition, and technology. In Silicon Valley, many young professionals are deprioritizing romance to focus on careers amid layoffs and AI-driven job pressure. Traditional dating apps feel exhausted, while LinkedIn networking requests double as romantic screening tools. Platforms like Tinder and Hinge are investing heavily in AI matchmaking, and new features like Partiful’s “Crush” blur the line between real-life connection and algorithms. Romance, it seems, is becoming optimized too.
