Trump Threatens Insurrection Act Use Amid Minneapolis Immigration Protests

President Donald Trump said he may invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act to deploy troops amid protests in Minneapolis against a federal immigration crackdown. Demonstrations intensified after an immigration officer shot a man in the leg during an arrest, and following the earlier fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Trump has constitutional authority to use the act. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz urged de-escalation, while Attorney General Keith Ellison said he would challenge any action in court. The Department of Homeland Security says more than 2,500 arrests have been made since late November.

US, Iran Clash at UN as Protest Death Toll Rises

US and Iranian officials confronted each other at an emergency UN Security Council meeting requested by the United States amid nationwide protests in Iran. US Ambassador Mike Waltz said President Donald Trump had made clear that “all options are on the table” to stop the crackdown, which activists say has killed at least 2,677 people.

Deputy Iranian Ambassador Hossein Darzi accused the US of steering unrest toward violence. Iranian dissidents Masih Alinejad and Ahmad Batebi testified about attacks and abuse they said were carried out by Iranian authorities. Trump signaled possible de-escalation as protests appeared to slow under heavy security.

Cancer Survival Hits Record High, Even Deadliest Types See Gains

According to the American Cancer Society’s annual report released on January 13, cancer survival is increasing despite rising diagnoses. The report found seven in 10 cancer patients now survive at least five years, up from about half in the 1970s. Five-year survival for metastatic cancer has doubled since the 1990s.

ACS Chief Patient Officer Arif Kamal said major gains have occurred in liver, lung, melanoma, breast, and ovarian cancers, with breast cancer mortality down 42% since the 1990s. The US now has about 18 million cancer survivors, with that number expected to grow by up to 500,000 annually.

WEIGH IN

Modern life makes comfort effortless but movement optional. Hours of sitting, scrolling, and driving quietly reshape posture, tighten hips, and stiffen spines, raising concerns about long-term mobility and aging well. Some experts argue that short, daily stretching routines can counteract this damage, improving posture, calming the nervous system, and supporting longevity. Others question whether a few minutes of stretching is enough to offset deeply ingrained sedentary habits, or if broader lifestyle changes are necessary to truly protect the body over time.
