One in Four Medicare Patients With Dementia Prescribed Brain-Altering Drugs
Research published January 12 in JAMA found that about one in four Medicare beneficiaries with dementia received CNS-active medications linked to falls, confusion, and hospitalization. Researchers analyzed Health and Retirement Study survey data linked to Medicare fee-for-service claims from 2013 to 2021. Overall prescribing declined from 20% to 16%, but rates remained higher among those with cognitive impairment and dementia.
The study examined antidepressants with anticholinergic properties, antipsychotics, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and sleep medications. Senior author Dr. John N. Mafi said most prescriptions lacked documented clinical indications.

As Protest Toll Reaches Over 640, Trump Says Iran Willing To Negotiate
US President Donald Trump said Iran seeks negotiations after his threat of strikes over its crackdown on protests, which activists report has killed at least 646 people. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed the situation is “under total control,” blaming Israel and the US, but said Iran is “open to diplomacy.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said private messages differ from public rhetoric. Trump announced 25% US tariffs on countries doing business with Iran. More than 10,700 people have been detained, including 512 protesters, while the internet remains shut, complicating independent verification of casualties.

Why Your Social Life in Pods Isn’t a Failure of Adulthood
Many adults maintain friendships through one-on-one interactions rather than larger friend groups. Lifestyle influencer Carly Silverman said she feels sad about lacking a group of friends. Research from the American Friendship Project found most Americans report five or more friends, similar to historical trends.
Psychologists Letitia Anne Peplau and Robin Dunbar note loneliness can stem from emotional or social isolation. Personality traits such as extraversion, openness, and gender differences influence whether people form group or one-on-one friendships. Social scientists emphasize that friend groups are not necessary for fulfilling relationships, though they can provide unique structural support.

What happens when a city treats women’s unpaid care work as real economic labor? Bogotá has spent five years building “care blocks,” neighborhood hubs offering free child and elder care alongside laundry, legal aid, job training, and health services. The goal is to reduce “time poverty” for caregivers, most of them women, who shoulder hours of unpaid work daily. The program reframes care as shared responsibility between families, communities, and the state, and its model is now spreading globally, with a US pilot expected in 2026.
