This is Not an Average Winter Storm
A major winter storm is expected to sweep across the eastern two-thirds of the United States this weekend, bringing snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain. The system is forecast to affect about half the US population, according to Alex Lamers of the Weather Prediction Center, who called it unusually impactful.
The storm is expected to develop on Friday in the Southern Rockies, expand across the Plains and South on Saturday, and reach the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Sunday. Afterward, Arctic air could bring prolonged, potentially record-breaking cold into next week.

New Year, No Shopping?
A growing number of Americans are participating in “No Buy January,” a social-media-driven challenge to avoid nonessential purchases for the month. The trend includes skipping spending on items like clothing, skin care and electronics, as consumers respond to rising costs and financial stress.
Surveys show more than a quarter of US adults have tried a no-spend January, with 12% participating this year. Participants cited inflation, affordability concerns and economic uncertainty as motivations, while tracking progress online and setting strict personal spending rules to cut discretionary expenses.

A federal appeals court temporarily blocked a judge’s order limiting how immigration agents interact with protesters in Minnesota, including bans on retaliatory pepper spray use and stopping non-obstructive vehicles. The Trump administration argued the injunction endangered officers’ safety. Separately, a newly revealed ICE memo says agents may forcibly enter homes using administrative warrants, not judge-signed ones, marking a shift in past practice.
