Trump Revokes Emergency Abortions Policy

The Trump administration on Tuesday revoked a Biden-era rule requiring hospitals to offer emergency abortions when a woman’s health is at risk — even in states where abortion is banned. Tracking abortion laws across the country.
The change, issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was expected but adds to mounting confusion about abortion access in medical emergencies since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The administration didn’t explicitly tell hospitals they could deny emergency abortions.
The CMS said it will still enforce Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), the federal law requiring emergency care, “including for identified emergency medical conditions that place the health of a pregnant woman or her unborn child in serious jeopardy”. It “will work to rectify any perceived legal confusion and instability,” the agency said in a statement.
Global Economy Set to Slow, Tariffs Take the Blame
Global growth is expected to slow, partly due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, according to a Tuesday report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). If current tariffs — the highest since 1938 — stay in place, U.S. GDP growth could drop from 2.8% in 2024 to 1.6% in 2025 and 1.5% in 2026. The OECD also cut its global 2025 forecast from 3.1% to 2.9%, with a smaller dip expected in 2026.
While Trump isn’t named, much of the report centers on tariff hikes introduced on “Liberation Day” in April. “Weakened economic prospects will be felt around the world, with almost no exception,” said OECD chief economist Álvaro Pereira, mirroring the IMF’s warning last month of a “significant slowdown”.
The OECD notes that its projections remain uncertain, pointing to the unpredictability of trade policy in 2025. Not just the U.S., the report also cut the UK's growth expectations. Global economic challenges could worsen with new trade barriers — or ease if tensions cool. By mid-May, OECD estimates placed the average U.S. import tax at 15.4%, up from 2% in 2024.
Dutch Government Collapses
The Dutch government has collapsed after far-right leader Geert Wilders pulled his PVV party from the ruling coalition in a dispute over migration. Wilders had pushed for 10 tough asylum measures, including freezing applications, halting new reception centers, and limiting family reunification. His demands ended the fragile coalition formed in July 2024, less than a year ago, with the VVD, BBB, and New Social Contract. Who is Wilders?
Prime Minister Dick Schoof confirmed his resignation on Tuesday and submitted the cabinet's resignation to King Willem-Alexander. Calling Wilders' move “irresponsible and unnecessary,” Schoof said, “As far as I'm concerned, this shouldn't have happened.”
With PVV ministers set to resign, the remaining coalition members will govern in a caretaker capacity until elections — likely not before October. The collapse delays key decisions, including on defense spending, and leaves the Netherlands with a caretaker government as it prepares to host a major NATO summit this month.
