DC National Guard Shooting Leaves Immigration Hanging In Balance
President Donald Trump is escalating his immigration agenda after a tragic shooting near the White House left one National Guard member dead and another critically injured. He called for a “permanent pause” on migration from poorer nations and vowed to revoke legal status for millions of immigrants, blaming them for crime, housing shortages, and what he called “social dysfunction” in America. Witness photos capture the attack.
The suspect in the attack, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is a 29-year-old Afghan national who worked alongside US forces during the Afghanistan War and later entered the country legally through a resettlement program. How is he being charged? His case has intensified political debate, even as studies show immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than US-born citizens. What we know so far.
Trump is now pushing for expanded screenings, denaturalization efforts, and mass deportations. Critics warn such moves would undermine the country’s long-standing identity as a nation of immigrants.
