Trump, Mamdani Buddies After Chummy White House Meeting?
President Trump and New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani held an unexpectedly warm 45-minute meeting at the White House on Friday, marking a sharp shift from their tense campaign exchanges. Trump, who had previously labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned that his election posed an existential threat, instead praised him repeatedly, saying: “I expect to be helping him, not hurting him — a big help,” and later, Communist? Fascist? Or Was it just two guys from Queens.“The better he does, the happier I am.” Mamdani, who had vowed on the trail to challenge the president, called the discussion “productive” and said he hoped to work with Trump to “improve life in New York”. Read the whole transcript of their comments.
Both leaders emphasized shared priorities, especially affordability, housing, groceries, and cost-of-living pressures, issues central to Mamdani’s campaign and increasingly important to Trump’s economic messaging. Key takeaways and moments. Mamdani said the meeting “focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers.” Trump said he would be comfortable in Mamdani’s New York. Their rapport was notable given months of heated rhetoric, including Trump questioning Mamdani’s citizenship and Mamdani calling Trump a “despot”.
For New York City, the meeting carried high stakes amid concerns Trump might withhold federal support or deploy the National Guard once Mamdani takes office on January 1. Friday’s conciliatory tone suggested a temporary easing of tensions as both leaders navigate overlapping political interests. The meeting has gotten mixed reviews.
