Guess Who’s Back? Congress, And With Work Cut Out
Congress returned Tuesday after a six-week recess facing multiple high-stakes issues, led by a looming September 30 deadline to avert a government shutdown. President Donald Trump has resisted meeting with Democratic leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, who want bipartisan talks to restore Medicaid and rural hospital funding. With only a few appropriations bills advanced, lawmakers are expected to lean on a stopgap resolution, though Trump’s push for a $4.9 billion rescissions package further complicates prospects.
At the same time, the Jeffrey Epstein case is expected to dominate proceedings. A House panel released over 33,000 pages of Epstein-related files, including flight logs, jail footage, and court records. Chairman James Comer acknowledged the documents contained little new information, but lawmakers remain divided over transparency. Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna are pressing for a vote to compel full release, while Speaker Mike Johnson has favored DOJ control. Survivors met privately with lawmakers Tuesday, with Johnson describing the session as emotional.
Beyond spending and Epstein, Congress faces Trump’s controversial federalization of Washington’s police force, confirmation battles over nominees, ongoing Russia-Ukraine policy debates, and continued GOP-led investigations into former President Joe Biden’s health. With partisan divides deepening, progress across these fronts remains uncertain.

In Xi’s China, It’s A Party Without Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and leaders from 24 other nations at Beijing’s largest-ever Victory Day military parade on Wednesday. See photos. The event, commemorating 80 years since Japan’s surrender in World War II, underscored a shifting global alignment. Notably absent were Western leaders, while newcomers included Iran, Cuba, and Serbia, reflecting a guest list increasingly tilted toward governments aligned or sympathetic with Beijing and Moscow.
Xi stood alongside Putin and Kim atop Tiananmen Gate, the first time since the Cold War that the three leaders appeared together at such a display. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also attended, while South Korea, Brazil, and Egypt sent envoys. Analysts have described this grouping as an “axis of upheaval,” a loose coalition challenging the U.S.-led order. Xi declared that China is “unstoppable” and the world must choose between “peace or war, dialogue or confrontation.” Who is the unexpected guest Kim Jong Un brought?
President Donald Trump, watching from Washington, dismissed concerns of an emerging anti-U.S. bloc. On Truth Social, he wrote: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as you conspire against the United States of America.” Trump added that China “needs us much more than we need them,” stressing U.S. military dominance.

Vogue’s New Editor Is A ‘Proud’ Nepo Baby
Chloe Malle, daughter of actress Candice Bergen and filmmaker Louis Malle, has been named the new head of editorial content at Vogue, succeeding Anna Wintour after her 37-year tenure as U.S. editor. At 39, Malle takes the helm of the American edition while Wintour remains Condé Nast’s chief content officer and global editorial director of Vogue, continuing to oversee all 28 international editions.
Malle, who joined Vogue in 2011 and became editor of Vogue.com in 2023, has overseen digital growth, co-hosted the magazine’s podcast The Run-Through, and introduced initiatives ranging from expanded wedding coverage to playful features like “Dogue.” She described herself as a “proud nepo baby,” acknowledging her privileged upbringing while emphasizing her determination to prove her editorial skills.
In interviews, Malle stressed that she does not intend to be “Anna lite,” pledging to put her own stamp on the brand. Her vision includes reducing print frequency in favor of collectible, high-quality editions tied to cultural moments, while fostering a more focused, engaged online audience. Wintour praised her as a “voracious journalist” with an “eye for the definitive image,” calling her both a mentee and a colleague as Vogue charts its future in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Luxury fashion once symbolized status, but soaring prices, exclusivity fatigue, and cultural shifts have pushed millions of shoppers away. From $10,000 handbags to endless TikToks flaunting Birkins, many now question whether luxury is worth it. Some trade down to affordable brands, others seek vintage finds, while the wealthiest still splurge selectively. As luxury grapples with identity, consumers are redefining what feels aspirational.
