Scroll On, US Signs Deal To Keep TikTok In Your Phone
The Trump administration and China have reached a framework agreement to keep TikTok operational in the United States, officials announced Monday, capping a yearslong effort that began during Trump’s first term. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Trump will speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping Friday to finalize the deal, paving the way for a potential Trump-Xi meeting in Asia this fall.
The agreement outlines U.S. and Chinese cooperation on TikTok-related issues, including licensing algorithms, entrusted operation of U.S. user data, and reducing investment barriers, while safeguarding national security and commercial interests. Although the administration did not name the U.S.-backed buyer, reports point to a group led by Oracle chairman Larry Ellison, a Trump ally who already hosts TikTok’s U.S. data. Did China agree to a sale?
TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has faced a U.S. ban under a bipartisan law over national security concerns, requiring divestment of its U.S. operations or removal from app stores. Trump repeatedly delayed enforcement, arguing TikTok’s popularity with young Americans benefited him politically. The app currently boasts 170 million U.S. users and generates billions in revenue. Officials said the framework ensures Americans can continue using TikTok while meeting legal and security requirements. Could this tech company be buying TikTok?
