Student Loan Collections Begin

Beginning Monday, student loan borrowers in default will once again face government-backed involuntary collections, marking a major shift after years of pauses, delays, and Biden-era relief efforts. This ends a five-year suspension of these harsh penalties that began during the COVID-19 economic crisis.
Of the nearly 43 million borrowers, only a little over a third have made consistent payments, according to the agency. During the five-year pause, student debt has ballooned to $1.6 trillion. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the resumption of collections would help relieve taxpayers from bearing that burden.
Borrowers in default are being urged via email to contact the Default Resolution Group to explore options like setting up monthly payments, enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan, or entering loan rehabilitation — a process that can remove a default from their record after consistent payments over a set period. To arrange monthly payments, borrowers who haven’t had recent changes to their income or marital status must submit their latest Federal 1040 tax return. The Education Department will also resume collections through the Treasury Department’s Offset Program, which allows the government to reclaim unpaid debts by withholding tax refunds, wages, and benefits such as Social Security.
Life Expectancy in Southern States Barely Changed in a Century
A new CDC report reveals that U.S. life expectancy rose in 2023, reaching its highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic. But gains were uneven. In several Southern states, life expectancy barely improved — particularly among women.
Researchers from the Yale School of Public Health analyzed death records for 77 million women and 102 million men born between 1900 and 2000. They found that women’s average life expectancy nationwide rose from 73.8 to 84.1 years, while men’s increased from 62.8 to 80.3 years.
Men born in 2000 in the South had a lower life expectancy but showed greater improvement than women since 1900 in some states.
Trump Meets the Press
In an interview that aired Sunday, President Donald Trump stated he was unsure if everyone on U.S. soil was entitled to due process, despite constitutional guarantees. He argued that following this principle would slow down his mass deportation efforts. The exchange, on NBC’s Meet the Press, was sparked by host Kristen Welker asking Trump if he agreed with Secretary of State Marco Rubio that both citizens and noncitizens in the U.S. were entitled to due process.
“I don’t know,” Mr. Trump replied. “I’m not, I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.” Ms. Welker pointed out that the Fifth Amendment guarantees due process. “I don’t know,” Mr. Trump responded again. “It seems — it might say that, but if you’re talking about that, then we’d have to have a million or two million or three million trials.”
Trump took credit for the "good parts" of the economy while blaming former President Joe Biden for the “bad parts”, despite acknowledging that some prices have risen. He argued that the rising prices, such as those for strollers and tires, were "peanuts" compared to the significant drops in energy prices. This comes amid negative economic indicators that have marked his first 100 days in office.
In the interview, Trump also discussed other critical issues, ranging from willingness to lower China’s tariffs to giving another extension on the TikTok ban. Fact-checking the interview.
