Supreme Court Temporarily Blocks Order To Release SNAP Benefits
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on Friday temporarily halted a lower-court order requiring the Trump administration to release full November food assistance benefits, throwing millions of Americans into renewed uncertainty. The brief order, known as an administrative stay, pauses enforcement while an appeals court reviews the case, which has become a flashpoint in the ongoing government shutdown.
The ruling followed a Rhode Island judge’s directive ordering the administration to use reserve funds to fully finance the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s largest anti-hunger initiative. Who gets the benefit and what government pays for? Judge John J. McConnell Jr. said millions could face “irreparable harm” without access to their benefits. But the Trump administration appealed, arguing the court had overstepped and that shifting funds would “mock the separation of powers.”
Before the Supreme Court’s intervention, several states — including New York and Oregon — had already begun issuing full benefits to residents after receiving federal guidance suggesting money was forthcoming. Now, those payments could face delays as legal wrangling continues.
Roughly 42 million low-income Americans depend on SNAP for groceries, and advocates warn the pause could leave families hungry. How are families coping without SNAP benefits? Democrats accused President Trump of using food aid as leverage amid the shutdown, while the administration insists Congress must resolve the funding crisis.
