SCOTUS Rules Against Colorado’s Conversion Therapy Ban

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled 8–1 in Chiles v. Salazar that Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy for minors violates the First Amendment. The case was brought by counselor Kaley Chiles, who challenged the 2019 law restricting licensed providers from offering such therapy to patients under 18.

Writing for the majority, Neil Gorsuch said the law impermissibly limited free speech. Ketanji Brown Jackson was the sole dissenter. The ruling overturns a prior appeals court decision and affects enforcement of similar laws in 23 states and Washington, D.C., though it applies specifically to talk therapy.

Birthright Citizenship Set To Face Court

The Supreme Court of the United States is set to hear arguments on President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship. Signed at the start of his current term, the order limits citizenship to children born to US citizens or legal permanent residents. Do most Americans favor birthright citizenship?

Lower courts have blocked the policy, ruling it violates the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. The Supreme Court could rule on constitutional grounds or decide the case based on a 1940 federal law. Trump is expected to attend the hearing, marking the first time a sitting president has attended Supreme Court oral arguments.

Doctor AI To The Rescue?

Microsoft has introduced a health feature for Copilot that allows users to upload medical records and combine them with data from devices like the Apple Watch. The system analyzes the data to provide summaries of health patterns and potential concerns. Similar tools are being developed by OpenAI and Amazon.

Experts note risks including data privacy concerns, as health information may be vulnerable to breaches or legal access, and may not be protected under healthcare privacy laws. Studies also show chatbots can provide inconsistent or inaccurate guidance, highlighting the need for caution when using such tools.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has released new dietary guidance pushing a plant-forward approach, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins while limiting sugar, salt, and ultra-processed foods. The recommendations differ in parts from guidance backed by Donald Trump, which includes support for full-fat dairy and higher animal protein intake. The AHA also advises low-fat dairy, leaner meats in smaller portions, and reduced alcohol consumption, with guidance applying from early childhood.
