Senate Strikes Last-Minute Deal To Avert Shutdown

Senate Democrats reached a deal with President Trump and Republicans to avert a shutdown by separating Department of Homeland Security funding from a larger spending package. The agreement allows full-year funding for most federal agencies and a stopgap measure keeping DHS funded until Feb. 13.

The deal followed Democrats’ refusal to advance the minibus after the fatal Minneapolis shooting of Alex Pretti by a federal agent. Senator Chuck Schumer demanded limits on immigration operations, while Trump urged bipartisan approval. Republicans expressed safety concerns over proposed restrictions, and some lawmakers questioned the House’s ability to pass the bills.

Can You Really ‘Scoop Out’ Your Period?

A viral social media trend claims people can “scoop out” their periods to stop bleeding before events. Gynecologists say this is impossible and unsafe. Experts explain that menstrual blood comes from the uterus and cannot be removed manually; at most, clearing the vagina is comparable to briefly removing a tampon.

Doctors warn of risks including injury, infection, and pH disruption. Procedures like dilation and curettage are only used for medical reasons and not to shorten periods. Specialists note that only hormonal methods, such as birth control or progestin medications, can safely lighten or prevent periods.

AI Poses Bigger Job Loss Risk For Women

A report from the Brookings Institution and the Centre for the Governance of AI found that workers in women-dominated clerical and administrative roles face the highest risk of job disruption from artificial intelligence.

Researchers said more than 6 million workers could struggle to adapt because of age, limited savings, or other factors, with 86% of this group being women. Mark Muro of Brookings said these occupations “have been under attack for a long time.” Sam Manning of the Centre for the Governance of AI said workers in fields like marketing, finance, and science are better positioned to transition.

BEYOND THE MIRROR

👜 If we know anything from the spring/summer 2026 runways, it’s that your bags are going big, bright, and undone to favor practicality over perfectionism.

🪞 The only brow trend worth following this year is the one that actually fits your face. Yes, it has come full circle with authenticity finally beating the one-size-fits-all Instagram look.

🩰 Ballet flats are classic, but there’s a new (and sleek) high-vamp silhouette that’s taking over high fashion.

💅 Finally, a French mani that doesn’t feel dated! This soft upgrade ditches those harsh white linesfor a finish that looks like your nails — only more expensive.

Can I ask someone if they’re on Ozempic?

Conversations about GLP-1 drugs are getting tricky as rapid weight loss sparks curiosity, assumptions, and sometimes invasive questions. Experts say intentions matter: Are you asking to learn, or just being nosy? Tone, phrasing, and privacy all shape whether the conversation feels supportive or judgmental. And for those on the receiving end, choosing how open to be can help reduce stigma while still protecting personal boundaries.
