Trump Commutes Former Rep. George Santos’ Prison Sentence In Fraud Case

Former US Rep. George Santos walked free on Friday night after President Donald Trump commuted his seven-year prison sentence, citing “justice, humanity, and political persecution.” Santos, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft, had served just 84 days. “George Santos was somewhat of a ‘rogue,’ but there are many rogues throughout our country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He claimed Santos had been “horribly mistreated” and “in solitary confinement for long stretches”.

Santos’ plea deal required him to pay over $370,000 in restitution, but Trump’s order cleared “further fines, restitution, probation, supervised release, or other conditions”. His lawyer, Joseph Murray, said, “A great injustice has been corrected.” The decision divided Republicans. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene praised Trump’s move, calling it “the right thing to do,” while Rep. Nick LaLota slammed it, saying Santos’ crimes “warrant more than a three-month sentence.”

Santos’ release is the latest in a string of high-profile clemencies for Republican allies, underscoring Trump’s willingness to defend loyalists. As Trump wrote, “At least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN!” Democrats, meanwhile, decried the commutation as political favoritism, with Sen. Richard Blumenthal calling Trump’s defense “fabricated nonsense.”
