Congress Ends Record DHS Shutdown

The House voted on Thursday to approve a Senate-passed bill funding most Department of Homeland Security agencies, ending the agency’s record 75-day shutdown. President Donald Trump signed the bill into law, funding FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard and Secret Service through September.

The measure excludes new funding for ICE and Border Patrol after Democrats demanded immigration enforcement changes. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin warned emergency funds were nearly exhausted. The House also passed a 45-day extension of FISA Section 702 before recess. Speaker Mike Johnson said, “We’re not going to have lines at TSA. Everybody will get their paychecks now.” Republicans separately advanced a budget plan allowing up to $70 billion for immigration enforcement agencies through reconciliation without Democratic support.

Minnesota Passes Nation’s First Ban on AI Nudification Apps

Minnesota lawmakers approved the nation’s first ban on “nudification” apps, passing the bill 65-0 in the Senate Wednesday after House approval last week. The legislation now heads to Gov. Tim Walz for signature. The bill targets apps using generative AI to create nude images from clothed photos without consent. Minnesota House File 1606 allows survivors to sue app owners and permits the state attorney general to seek fines of $500,000 per violation.

RAINN said tech-facilitated abuse is increasing, with children increasingly involved in deepfake cases. Research found nudification apps remain accessible despite bans from Apple and Google app stores. “These images don’t exist without a third-party involvement and some sort of machine learning model,” advocate Molly Kelley said.

Dirty Soda Is No Longer Just a TikTok Obsession

Dirty sodas — soda mixed with cream, syrups or fruit — are officially leaving niche internet territory. What started in Utah as a customizable sweet treat has exploded across TikTok, with creators turning Diet Coke, Dr Pepper and Sprite into dessert-like drinks topped with coconut cream, lime or flavored syrups. The trend has become so popular that major brands are now cashing in.

The Coca-Cola Company recently credited drinks like Cherry Float for boosting revenue, while chains like Swig and Sonic Drive-In expanded dirty soda menus. Coffee Mate even launched dedicated Dirty Soda Creamers. The drinks trace back to Mormon communities in Utah, where alcohol and coffee restrictions helped fuel creative soda culture.

WEIGH IN

King Charles arrived in New York after a high-profile Washington visit filled with praise from President Donald Trump and Congress. But in NYC, the reception turned noticeably cooler. Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly declined a private meeting with the king and said he would instead urge Charles to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond, long disputed over Britain’s colonial history in India. The moment sparked fresh debate around monarchy, colonial-era artifacts, and whether modern royals should answer for the past. While Charles focused on 9/11 memorial events and charity visits, the political tension around the trip quickly became part of the story.
