Work

Your Office Laptop Might Be Spying On You

Employers are increasingly using technology to monitor workers’ activities and locations, especially on company devices, the US Government Accountability Office reports. Tools from Google and Microsoft can archive texts or track WiFi-based office locations if activated.

Some employees support monitoring for safety but oppose productivity tracking. Experts warn of privacy and ethical concerns when personal devices are involved. Ben Zhao, University of Chicago computer science professor, said monitoring is part of employer-employee negotiations. William Budington of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Vanessa Matsis-McCready of Engage PEO highlighted risks of data access, device policies, and the need for transparency.

Manhunt Underway, New Footage Released After Brown University Shooting

A manhunt continued on Tuesday for a suspect in a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, that killed students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov and wounded nine others. Police released new videos of a person of interest Monday near campus streets two hours before the shooting.

The FBI described him as approximately 5-foot-8 with a stocky build and is offering up to $50,000 for information. Providence Police Chief Oscar L. WEIGH IN

Many workers in their 40s are heading back to school, juggling jobs, families, and tuition costs to gain degrees, certifications, or new skills. Career changes, from chef to software engineer or butcher to USDA inspector, are becoming common as artificial intelligence reshapes the job market and midlife professionals seek stability, higher pay, or personal growth. For some, the financial and personal sacrifices are worth it for long-term career security and opportunities that were previously out of reach.
