Trump Administration To Send Troops To Chicago

Chicago was on edge this weekend after federal agents shot an armed woman during escalating immigration protests near a suburban ICE facility. Officials said Marimar Martinez drove her car into Customs and Border Protection vehicles in Broadview before being shot and taken into custody. The incident came amid growing anger over Operation Midway Blitz, a Department of Homeland Security crackdown that has led to over a thousand arrests in the Chicago area.

Hours later, President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago, calling the city “plagued by lawlessness”. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker condemned the move as “an attempt to manufacture a crisis”, warning that deploying federalized troops would “incite unrest, not prevent it”. Hundreds have protested outside the ICE facility, with demonstrations turning tense as federal agents used tear gas and pepper balls to disperse crowds.

Meanwhile, in Oregon, a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump’s plan to send 200 National Guard troops to Portland, ruling the move unconstitutional and “untethered to the facts”. Governor Tina Kotek called it “a victory for democracy”, while California’s Gavin Newsom joined the lawsuit, accusing Trump of “a breathtaking abuse of power”.

Israel, Hamas To Begin Talks In Qatar

Israel and Hamas are set to begin mediated talks in Egypt on Monday, aiming to end a two-year conflict that has devastated Gaza and destabilized the region. The negotiations follow Hamas’s agreement to discuss parts of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan, including releasing hostages and allowing a new Gaza government, though the group has yet to commit to disarmament or a postwar role. ‘So f***ing negative’: Did Trump really say to Netanyahu?

US envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will join the talks, alongside Israeli delegates led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and a Hamas team headed by Khalil al-Hayya. Discussions are expected to focus first on an immediate swap: Israel would release Palestinian prisoners while Hamas frees Israeli hostages. Netanyahu has said the military will redeploy in Gaza, keeping the option of disarming Hamas by force open. How likely is it that Trump’s Gaza plan will work?

Trump has urged both sides to act quickly, warning that delays could cost more lives. The talks mark the most promising diplomatic opportunity since the war began in October 2023, which has killed over 66,000 Palestinians and more than 450 Israeli soldiers. Analysts caution that while the hostage exchange may come soon, broader agreements on Gaza’s governance and Hamas disarmament will be far more complex.

US Supreme Court Returns To Test Trump’s Presidential Powers

The Supreme Court returns on Monday for a term that could redefine presidential power, with Chief Justice John Roberts marking 20 years on the bench. Over the summer, the justices issued emergency orders favoring President Donald Trump on policies from tariffs to immigration, often without full explanation, a pattern critics call the “shadow docket”.

Now, the court will confront these issues directly, hearing arguments that could determine whether Trump can maintain sweeping tariffs, remove independent agency officials at will, or end birthright citizenship by executive order. Legal experts say the stakes are extraordinary, with decisions likely to affect the U.S. economy, civil liberties, and the balance of powers.

Other cases on the docket could reshape society, including challenges to transgender rights in schools, the Voting Rights Act, and state rules on mail-in ballots. Conservative justices have repeatedly sided with the administration, while liberals have issued sharp dissents. Observers warn of potential clashes between the Supreme Court and lower courts, setting the stage for a term described as unprecedented in its political and constitutional significance.
