Meta’s Having A Tough Time With Scrolling

A Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google liable for a woman’s depression and anxiety linked to compulsive childhood social media use, awarding $6 million in damages. Jurors ruled the platforms’ design was a “substantial factor” in harm, with $3 million compensatory and $3 million punitive damages. “We wanted them to feel it,” a juror said. The case focused on app design over content to bypass Section 230 protections. Both companies plan to appeal.

In a separate New Mexico case earlier this week, Meta was ordered to pay $375 million after the state attorney general accused the Facebook and Instagram operator of failing to safeguard children on its platforms from child predators.

AI For Taxes? Well…

As major tax changes from the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act take effect, some filers are turning to AI tools for guidance. Chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude can explain updated rules, including deductions on tips and overtime, a higher Child Tax Credit of $2,200, and expanded 529 plans.

The IRS Direct File program has ended, increasing reliance on private software. Experts warn AI tools are not designed to file taxes or provide financial advice, and caution against uploading sensitive documents like W-2s or 1099s due to privacy risks. The tax code changes that could put more money in your pocket.

Work

Will Your Job Exist In Five Years?

“Will my job even exist in five years?” has quietly become every white-collar worker’s intrusive thought, thanks to tools like ChatGPT and Claude Code. AI can now code, consult, design homes, and even sing unsettlingly catchy songs. No wonder “job apocalypse” searches are spiking

But history offers perspective: when tractors replaced horses, humans adapted. The better question isn’t panic, it’s positioning. Are you a “horse” getting replaced, or “coal” becoming more valuable with demand? Tech often complements workers, not replaces them entirely. The reality is messier, slower, and more human than the panic suggests.

Vibration plates are trending on TikTok with claims they can help users lose weight and build muscle with minimal effort. While vibration can stimulate muscle contractions, experts say evidence for fat loss or muscle gain is limited. Studies show only modest benefits, mostly for sedentary individuals, and not enough to significantly change body composition. Some research suggests potential improvements in balance or bone density, particularly in older adults, but findings remain inconsistent. Experts stress that vibration plates cannot replace regular exercise or a healthy diet, despite their high cost.
