Spill The News

Marines Deployed To Los Angeles

The Trump administration deployed 700 active-duty Marines to support the National Guard amid Los Angeles protests, escalating a response California officials say is unjustified. The Marines were “placed in an alert status over the weekend” and “will seamlessly integrate with” Guardsmen, the US Northern Command said. The activation aims to provide Task Force 51, which now includes 2,100 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines, with adequate numbers of forces. Watch: How clashes exploded.

In response to deployment of forces in LA, California is suing the Trump administration amid ongoing clashes and a blame game between Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump. Newsom condemned the Marine deployment move, saying on X, “US Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They shouldn’t be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President.” Protests in pictures.

The Trump administration also ramped up raids on suspected undocumented immigrants on Monday, sparking protests and criticism from Democrats over a growing national crisis. Amidst this, President Trump is inching closer to invoking the Insurrection Act, a sweeping emergency power that allows U.S. troops to quell domestic unrest. Now, he's signaling his intent, telling reporters Monday: “The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators. They're insurrectionists.” How did Mexican flag become a resistance symbol in LA protests?

World Fertility Rate Declining; More Parents Want Girls

A new report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) warns that falling fertility rates are becoming a global norm, not due to choice, but because hundreds of millions are unable to have as many children as they want. The agency cites financial strain and lack of suitable partners as major barriers to parenthood — not infertility, which only 12% of respondents identified as a reason.

UNFPA surveyed 14,000 people across 14 countries — including the U.S., India, South Korea, Nigeria, and Brazil. One in five respondents said they haven’t had or don’t expect to have their desired number of children. Financial constraints were the most common barrier, with 39% of respondents citing them — highest in South Korea (58%) and lowest in Sweden (19%). Infertility was more commonly cited in Thailand, the U.S., South Africa, Nigeria, and India.

Alongside falling fertility rates, global attitudes toward gender are also shifting. Once heavily skewed toward sons — especially in countries like India and China, where millions of baby girls were aborted over decades — parents’ preferences are changing. The number of excess male births has dropped from 1.7 million in 2000 to an estimated 200,000 in 2024, signaling a dramatic decline in sex-selective practices. In fact, for the first time, some wealthier nations are even showing a preference for daughters, marking a historic reversal in global gender norms.

Brutal Time For Women Executives

It’s a challenging moment for women executives, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color in leadership pipelines. After years of slow but steady progress, corporate America is pulling back on its commitment to diversity. Executive recruiters say companies are no longer prioritizing “diverse slates” during CEO and board searches. Instead, they’re reverting to rigid specifications that often exclude these segments, even if qualified.

Political pushback, particularly from the Trump administration’s stance on ending DEI programs, has intensified this shift. Even companies once praised for their diversity, like Meta, have seen sharp declines — with female representation on its board falling from 44% in 2022 to just 23% today. External hiring of women CEOs into Fortune 500 companies has also stalled completely in the past year.

Experts warn that this retreat from inclusive leadership not only narrows the talent pool but could also damage long-term trust and innovation inside organizations. Diversity, once central to corporate transformation, is now being quietly deprioritized
