ONE BIG HEADLINE
Trump’s Mulling On Making Pot A Less Dangerous Drug

President Donald Trump is weighing whether to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous Schedule III drug, The Washington Journal reported. The move would ease restrictions, allow tax breaks for cannabis companies, and expand medical research. The idea gained momentum at a recent $1 million-a-plate fundraiser at Trump’s New Jersey golf club, attended by major industry figures including Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers, who urged the change.
Cannabis firms have poured millions into Trump-aligned political groups after similar efforts under President Biden stalled when he left office. Supporters, including influential donors, lobbyists, and advisers like Alex Bruesewitz, argue the policy enjoys overwhelming public backing and could energize young, independent, and libertarian-leaning voters ahead of the midterms.
Trump, who is allegedly a longtime teetotaler wary of drug use, has cited friends using medical marijuana for pain and previously backed Florida legalization efforts. However, his advisers are split: political strategists see the move as an “80-20” cultural issue, while policy aides warn of legal and policing implications. Opposition groups, such as Smart Approaches to Marijuana, are lobbying against it. The final decision rests with Trump, whose administration is reviewing agency feedback. With nearly 60% of Americans supporting recreational legalization, advocates call rescheduling a “no brainer,” though no timeline has been set.
