Two Arrested In Louvre Jewelry Heist

Two men from the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis have been arrested over the audacious $102 million jewel heist at the Louvre Museum. French police say the suspects, both dual nationals of France and North or West African countries, were detained while attempting to flee, one at Charles de Gaulle Airport bound for Algeria, the other en route to Mali. DNA evidence from a helmet left at the scene reportedly led to their capture. What we know about the two suspects.

The October 19 theft, executed in under four minutes, saw four masked thieves use a vehicle-mounted lift to access the museum’s Apollo Gallery, smash display cases with power tools, and escape on motorbikes. Timeline of the theft. Among the eight stolen items were crowns and necklaces once worn by Napoleon’s wife, Empress Eugénie, and other 19th-century royals. A list of everything that was stolen.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the crime “an attack on our heritage,” while Culture Minister Rachida Dati described it as “a simple but spectacular operation.” Louvre moves rest of the jewels to ultra-secure Bank of France. Security lapses, including missing CCTV coverage, have come under sharp scrutiny. As the nationwide manhunt for two more suspects continues, experts fear the jewels may already have been dismantled and sold.

Trump Touches Down In Asia

President Donald Trump kicked off his first Asia tour of the term, landing in Malaysia to push for major trade and investment deals and meet with regional leaders ahead of a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump said he aims to secure a “comprehensive” agreement with China, addressing issues like fentanyl trafficking and stalled US soybean exports.

In Kuala Lumpur, Trump attended the ASEAN summit, where he oversaw a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand and signed new trade pacts with Malaysia and Cambodia, while advancing negotiations with Thailand and Vietnam. The deals, worth hundreds of billions, open new markets for US goods while maintaining tariffs of up to 20% to protect domestic industries. Why Trump wants to meet Kim Jong Un. Trump also finalized agreements on critical minerals to reduce US reliance on China. Where did Trump’s initial southeast Asia deals disappear?

The president met briefly with Qatar’s emir to discuss Gaza security, then held talks with Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to ease tariffs and reset relations after months of strain. From Malaysia, Trump will travel to Japan and South Korea, where discussions on $900 billion in investments and a potential breakthrough in the US-China trade war await. US, China reach “framework” deal ahead of Trump-Xi meeting.

Justice Department To Monitor Key Elections In Democrat-Led States

The Trump Administration announced that the Department of Justice will monitor elections in six counties across California and New Jersey on November 4, following requests from Republican officials. The DOJ said the move aims to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized that “faith in the electoral process” depends on transparent oversight. Everything you need to know.

The decision comes amid heightened tensions over election integrity, given President Donald Trump’s repeated and unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud since 2020. Democrats in both states have condemned the action as politically motivated interference ahead of key races and ballot measures. California’s Proposition 50, which could add Democratic-leaning congressional seats, and New Jersey’s closely contested governor’s race have both drawn national attention. View the map to see where Trump plans to monitor elections.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the DOJ’s decision a “setup” to delegitimize Democratic victories, warning it could intimidate voters. Meanwhile, Republicans argue the monitoring is necessary after reports of irregularities. While election monitoring by the DOJ is not new, Democrats fear the Trump Administration is using it to cast doubt on results in Democratic-led states, a concern rooted in Trump’s long history of election denialism.
