Trump Deploys National Guard Amid LA Protests

The Trump administration on Saturday ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, who were last deployed in the city in 1992 riots, following widespread protests sparked by citywide ICE arrests a day earlier. A presidential memo confirmed the troops would be deployed under Title 10 authority “for 60 days or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense”. National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles early Sunday as the city braced for more unrest following ICE raids that swept up over 40 people on Friday. The arrests, carried out across LA, sparked protests outside the Edward Roybal Federal Building, where ICE detained multiple people, including children, according to the ACLU.
Police declared an unlawful assembly and used tear gas (watch) to disperse crowds after some protesters reportedly hurled concrete. On Saturday, false reports of another ICE raid led to new protests in Paramount, where tensions escalated into violence. In photos. Protesters clashed with police, and looters ransacked a gas station store. Paramount’s mayor later clarified that ICE agents were staging, not raiding. In Compton, unrest continued as demonstrators took to the streets and a car caught fire — though the cause remains unclear. All you need to know about the protests.
Trump received significant backlash from California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, who called Trump’s move to deploy the National Guard “purposefully inflammatory”, adding that it would “only escalate tensions”.
Columbia Presidential Candidate Shot
Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a 2026 presidential hopeful, was shot on Saturday from behind while speaking during a campaign event in a park in Bogotá’s Fontibón neighborhood, according to government and party officials. He underwent surgery, which as per the hospital, went well and he continues to remain in intensive care.
Footage circulating on social media showed 39-year-old Uribe, a member of the Democratic Center party, bleeding from the head. His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, said he is “fighting for his life” in the hospital.
The Colombian government is offering a $730,000 reward for information about the shooting. In a statement, the presidency condemned the attack and called for a full investigation. Colombia’s Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed a suspect had been arrested. He also visited Uribe at the hospital. President Gustavo Petro expressed sympathy to Senator Uribe’s family, calling it “the pain of a mother lost, and of a homeland”. He later revealed the arrested suspect is a minor and said authorities are probing who ordered the attack, while also reviewing potential security lapses.
Israel Stops Greta Thunberg’s Aid Ship From Reaching Gaza
Israeli forces boarded and seized the Madleen yacht, which was attempting to deliver symbolic humanitarian aid to Gaza in defiance of Israel’s naval blockade. All 12 activists on board, including Greta Thunberg, were detained. The vessel is being redirected to Ashdod, Israeli officials said, adding the activists are expected to be deported.
Footage released by Israel’s foreign ministry showed soldiers giving the activists food and water. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which organized the voyage, posted images of people in life jackets with hands raised, saying, “Connection has been lost.”
In pre-recorded videos, activists stated: “If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped.” FFC called the blockade illegal and accused Israel of using threats and smears to justify force. “We will not be intimidated. The world is watching,” said FFC press officer Hay Sha Wiya. The Madleen carried aid like rice and baby formula and included passengers from seven countries.
