Hyundai Plant Turns Into Ground Zero For ICE Raid
A Hyundai battery plant under construction in Ellabell, Georgia, became the focus of one of the largest U.S. immigration raids in recent history on Thursday. Federal officials said the months-long investigation culminated in 475 arrests, most involving Korean nationals.
Nearly 500 federal, state, and local officers surrounded the sprawling facility, blocking roads and moving in with armed, masked agents. Workers were lined against walls and questioned one by one. Those cleared were allowed to leave with documentation; others were taken into custody and transported to the Folkston ICE Processing Center. Some attempted to escape—hiding in air ducts or running into a sewage pond—before being detained.
Homeland Security Investigations said those arrested included individuals who had crossed illegally, overstayed visas, or violated visa waiver rules. Hyundai emphasized that none of the detainees were its direct employees, pledging stricter oversight of contractors. The raid, involving more than a dozen agencies, was described as the largest single-site enforcement action in Homeland Security Investigations’ history. South Korea dispatched diplomats in response, urging protection of its citizens’ rights. The operation temporarily halted construction at the $7.6 billion plant, projected to employ up to 8,500 people.

New U.S. tariffs have pushed the cost of European luxury goods high enough that affluent Americans are now flying overseas — often combining vacations with shopping sprees — to sidestep hefty markups. According to CNBC, some are saving thousands on high-end items like designer watches and handbags when they factor in VAT refunds and reduced import duties. Still, travelers must declare these purchases at customs or risk penalties.
