From DHS Shake-Up to Iran Intel, Congress Faces Two Big Tests

Congress is weighing change at home and clarity abroad, as Markwayne Mullin and Tulsi Gabbard face tough scrutiny. Mullin, nominated to lead Homeland Security, promised a steadier approach, including requiring court-approved warrants for home entries and rolling back internal micromanagement. While Republicans largely back him, Democrats raised concerns about temperament and transparency.

Meanwhile, Gabbard told lawmakers US strikes had weakened Iran’s military but avoided confirming any imminent nuclear threat, saying that judgment rests with the president. She also faced criticism over gaps in the intelligence report, including the omission of election interference threats, adding to broader concerns about credibility and oversight.

Women Who Undergo Menopause Before 40 At Higher Risk Of Heart Attacks

Women who experience menopause before age 40 face a significantly higher lifetime risk of heart attacks, according to a new study published in JAMA Cardiology. The research found a roughly 40% increase in fatal and nonfatal heart attacks compared to women who reach menopause later.

Black women were three times more likely than white women to report premature menopause, adding to existing cardiovascular risk disparities. Researchers say menopause can worsen blood pressure, cholesterol, and body composition, increasing heart risk. Experts emphasize the need to include reproductive history in cardiovascular assessments and to monitor risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose earlier and more closely.

GLP-1’s For Anxiety?

A large study suggests GLP-1 diabetes drugs like semaglutide may help prevent worsening anxiety and depression in people with type 2 diabetes. Researchers analyzed Swedish health data from nearly 95,000 patients between 2009 and 2022. Semaglutide was linked to a 42% lower risk of worsening mental health, while liraglutide showed an 18% reduction.

Significant drops were also seen in depression, anxiety, and substance use risks. Experts say benefits may stem from improved physical health, though direct mental health effects remain unproven. Separate research also flagged a higher risk of preterm birth with GLP-1 use during early pregnancy.

WEIGH IN

The FBI has admitted it buys Americans’ location data from private brokers, sidestepping the need for a warrant. Officials say it’s legal and useful for intelligence gathering, but critics argue it’s a loophole that undermines Fourth Amendment protections—especially in an era where AI can analyze massive datasets. Lawmakers across parties are now pushing reforms to curb this practice, raising a bigger question: has surveillance quietly outpaced privacy laws?
