DOJ Drops Probe Into Fed Chair Jerome Powell

The Department Of Justice has closed its criminal investigation into Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Friday over a $2.5 billion renovation at the central bank's Washington headquarters. In an X post made on Friday, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said she has redirected the inquiry to the Federal Reserve’s Inspector General. However, she noted that the DOJ could restart the probe if new facts warrant it.

The White House said that the investigation is “not necessarily dropped” but merely moved to a different authority. The move may clear the path for Trump's Fed chair nominee Kevin Warsh. Senator Thom Tillis had previously blocked Warsh’s confirmation in protest of the “bogus” investigation into Powell. The central bank attributes its $2.5 billion renovation bill to inflation. The administration maintains the project is a case of gross “fiscal mismanagement”.
