Extreme Heat Is Not Just Dangerous, It Makes Us Age Faster

Extreme heat doesn’t just feel miserable — it may also be aging us faster. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can damage our cells and tissues, accelerating biological aging, according to new research. While chronological age is simply how long we’ve lived, biological age reflects how well our body functions. “An accelerated biological age is the ‘canary in the coal mine’ for future risk of earlier onset of diseases such as cancer, dementia and diabetes, and early death,” said Jennifer Ailshire of USC’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.

Ailshire and Eunyoung Choi analyzed blood from 3,600+ older Americans and found those living with 140+ extreme heat days per year aged up to 14 months faster. That impact was as significant as smoking or heavy drinking. Other studies link heat to similar aging effects, especially for women, people with obesity or diabetes, and even babies exposed to heat in utero.

But accelerated aging isn’t necessarily permanent. “It’s an indicator of the potential for permanent damage,” Ailshire said. Adaptation — through cooling, better nutrition, or medication — may help. Still, she warns, “If we can’t do anything about rising temperatures, then at a minimum, we need to be increasing awareness and finding strategies.”
