EU, Mexico Hit With 30% Tariffs

President Trump on Saturday threatened to impose 30% tariffs from August 1 on all imports from Mexico and the European Union— two of the U.S.’s biggest trade partners — as part of an escalating tariff campaign since returning to office in January. The criticism that followed.
“The United States of America has agreed to continue working with the European Union, despite having one of our largest Trade Deficits with you. Nevertheless, we have decided to move forward, but only with more balanced and fair TRADE,” Trump wrote in a letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, posted on Truth Social. Von der Leyen warned that a 30% tariff “would hurt supply chains, businesses and consumers” and said the EU is prepared to take “proportionate countermeasures if required.” Are economies pushed to expand trade ties?
Both the EU as well as Mexico are in talks with the Trump administration to avoid escalation of these tariffs. This year alone, Trump has issued, paused, or adjusted tariffs in rapid succession, creating global uncertainty. The new tariffs, which exclude specific “Sectoral Tariffs” like the 25% auto duty, are set to take effect August 1.

Air India Crash Report Answers A Question, Raises More
A preliminary report has found that fuel to both engines of Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was cut off seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad on 12 June, causing the crash that killed 260 people. Cockpit recordings captured one pilot asking, “why did you cut off?” and the other replying, “did not do so.” Both fuel switches had moved from “run” to “cut-off” within a second, then returned to normal, but too late to regain control. More questions raised.
The report ruled out bird activity and confirmed both pilots had sufficient rest. It also noted that Air India hadn’t inspected the locking mechanism on the fuel switches, as a 2018 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory had urged. The U.S. FAA has said Boeing’s fuel control switches are safe, following the preliminary investigation.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson urged against “premature conclusions,” noting the report named no cause and found no mechanical faults. Still, Air India inspected its 787 fleet “out of an abundance of caution”. The tragedy — India’s worst air crash in nearly 30 years — killed all but one on board. For families, there are no closures.
Kentucky Church And Airport Shootings Leave Three Dead
Three people, including the shooter, are dead after two connected shootings on Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky. The violence began at Blue Grass Airport, where a state trooper was shot after stopping a suspect flagged by a license plate reader. The trooper was hospitalized and stabilized. The shooter fled to Richmond Road Baptist Church, 16 miles away, where he opened fire, killing two women — Beverly Gumm, 72, and her daughter Christina Combs, 32 — and injuring two men. One remains in critical condition.
Police shot the gunman to death at the scene. “Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have had a connection to the individuals at the church,” said Police Chief Lawrence Weathers. What we know so far.
Governor Andy Beshear urged prayers for those affected and praised law enforcement’s swift response. The FBI, ATF, and Kentucky State Police are assisting in the investigation. A motive is not yet clear. The airport briefly closed a terminal and roadway as a precaution.

One in five Americans is estranged from a family member over politics. A former Obama speechwriter admits to shunning his anti-vax brother-in-law — only to find that surfing, not arguing, brought them closer. Their views haven’t changed, but their relationship has. In a polarized America where family estrangement over politics is increasingly common, is cutting ties helping us — or just making things worse?
