Another Jobs Report Disproves Trump’s Booming Economy Claims

U.S. job growth slowed sharply in August, adding just 22,000 jobs, signaling a stalling labor market. Unemployment rose to 4.3% from 4.2%, and downward revisions showed the economy lost 13,000 jobs in June, the first net loss since December 2020. “The labor market is continuing to slow to stall speed,” said Rebecca Patterson, economist and senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Here’s a TLDR

Job losses were broad, hitting manufacturing, finance, construction, and professional services, while healthcare added 46,800 positions. Federal employment fell by 15,000, though some workers on leave or severance remain counted as employed. The labor force grew by 436,000 as more people re-entered the market, but long-term unemployment rose to 25.7%, with Black unemployment at 7.5%. An economist said, "We haven't added this few jobs since 2010, and we have 17 million more people in the labor market than we did then."

Analysts cite uncertainty from President Trump’s tariffs, immigration policies, and shifting federal programs. “They don’t know where things are going…so a lot of companies are just saying, ‘not now,’” said Ron Hetrick, senior labor economist at Lightcast. Trump criticized Fed Chair Jerome Powell: “Jerome ‘Too Late’ Powell should have lowered rates long ago. As usual, he’s ‘Too Late!’” Economists warn the slowdown leaves the labor market vulnerable, though a Federal Reserve rate cut this month is now widely expected.

Kyiv Suffers Russia’s Biggest Air Attack

Russia launched its largest airstrike of the war on Ukraine overnight, hitting Kyiv’s main government building and killing at least four people, including an infant, Ukrainian officials said. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks: “Such killings now, when real diplomacy could have already begun long ago, are a deliberate crime and a prolongation of the war.” The drone and missile barrage also struck Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv, causing widespread damage.

Ukrainian air defenses shot down 747 drones and four missiles, yet debris caused fires in residential buildings across Kyiv. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said, “For the first time, the government building sustained direct damage…We will restore the buildings. But lost lives cannot be returned. The enemy terrorizes and kills our people across the country every day.”

The attack underscores fears that the conflict will continue, with Russian President Vladimir Putin resisting ceasefire calls and strengthening ties with China. European and U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, signaled potential escalation in sanctions. Zelenskyy said he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron to coordinate defense and diplomatic efforts. Ukraine’s military also targeted Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline in retaliation, aiming to strike the financial backbone of Moscow’s war effort.

Viral Video Highlights Another Barrier in Women’s Health

Several healthcare workers at a Santa Barbara clinic were fired after appearing in a TikTok video mocking patients’ bodily fluids, their employer Sutter Health confirmed Wednesday. The now-deleted post, filmed at Sansum Clinic’s Pesetas Urgent Care, showed staff pointing and smiling at what appeared to be stains on exam tables with captions such as, “Guess the substance” and “Make sure you leave your healthcare workers sweet gifts like these!”

The video spread rapidly across TikTok, Reddit and Instagram, sparking outrage. “No place for shaming the patient in medicine,” one Reddit user wrote, while another on Instagram questioned, “Why did this many employees feel comfortable participating in this?”

Sutter Health said it launched an immediate review after being alerted by patients. “Within 24 hours of becoming aware of the posts, we placed the employees on administrative leave, and within another 24 hours, we terminated those involved,” the company said. Calling the behavior “an outright violation” of policies, Sutter stressed its commitment to patient dignity. “We expect all team members to live our patients-first mission and uphold the highest standards of compassion, professionalism and respect,” a spokesperson said.
